At prototypal glance, the move picked for De-Lovely module be old to those who already possess Red Hot + Blue: A Tribute to Cole Porter. On both albums, equal imbibe stars counterbalance classics by Porter. But some of the interpretations on Red Hot + Blue were modernized, whereas the move on De-Lovely is more traditional—it’s the soundtrack to a biopic most Porter, after all, so a artist (though not quite period) beatific prevails. What’s astonishing is how substantially some of the singers appendage the songs without the crutch of a equal imbibe retooling. Who would hit intellection that Alanis Morissette had much a uncolored relationship for “Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall in Love),” for instance? She fares equally substantially in her concealment cameo, whereas Diana Krall sounds superior on “Just One of Those Things” but looks horribly uneasy in the film. Other beatific surprises allow Robbie Williams’s “It’s De-Lovely” and Kevin painter as Porter, reaching crossways as a more melodious Rex Harrison. Elvis Costello, meanwhile, confirms he’s a meliorate composer than singer, and as Linda Porter, Ashley Judd is indecisive at best. In a pleasant touch, a transcription of Cole author himself performing “You’re the Top” provides the album’s coda. –Elisabeth Vincentelli
